This Tuesday PePe said farewell to the semester by celebrating the food and culture of Puerto Rico. Members enjoyed tostones, pan con bistec, cookies, and more. We also listened to Puerto Rican artists where members demonstrated their dancing skills!
Finally, congrats to Nicole  for winning two $10 Amy's gift cards and a 1000 piece cow puzzle in our mask making contest.

Brasil, en busca de jóvenes con MBA

Debido a su crecimiento y a la entrada de grandes empresas extranjeras al país, Brasil ha lanzado un SOS en busca de jóvenes con Máster en Business Administration (MBA), una mano de obra cualificada de la que carece gravemente. Directores y reclutadores de compañías brasileñas de sectores como el bancario, la industria y la aviación civil recorren Europa y otros países de América Latina en busca de mano de obra para completar sus cuadros de altos funcionarios. “Queremos un perfil que los brasileños aún no tienen. Por ahora estamos en Asia, América y Europa y necesitamos de expertos. Y no serviría contratar a un brasileño en aquellos países porque no funcionaría”, afirma la cazatalentos de Votarantim, Camila Miranda. Y añade: “Por ello, hacemos propuestas económicas por encima del mercado de aquí”.

Será precisamente ese tema de la educación, tanto primaria como académica, uno de los mayores temas de debate durante las elecciones presidenciales del año que viene. Ha caído como un jarro de agua fría en el gobierno de Dilma Rousseff el hecho de que entre las 200 mejores universidades del mundo no aparezca ni una brasileña, ni siquiera la Universidad de São Paulo (USP), que ya figuró en años pasados en importantes ranking mundiales de calidad y que hoy paga el precio de haberse politizado en exceso perdiendo en calidad de enseñanza.

En las semanas pasadas, la USP y otras universidades importantes fueron ocupados por parte de grupos de estudiantes de extrema izquierda que obligaron a actuar a las fuerzas de policía para desalojar las rectorías ocupadas y a veces depredadas.

“La mejor forma de participación es el uso de la ciudad”

“Joven emprendedor con local ubicado en el centro histórico de la ciudad” es una fórmula que no siempre equivale a abrir un bar. En el entorno dominado por la hostelería y el turismo low cost del barrio valenciano del Carmen, el economista urbano Ramon Marrades aterrizó en 2011 en el estudio compartido de un amigo, el arquitecto David Estal, tras acabar un máster de Geografía Económica en Utrecht. A pie de calle, en una planta baja, en L’Ambaixada trabajan siete jóvenes procedentes del diseño, la arquitectura, la economía y la comunicación que conciben el urbanismo con perspectiva plural. Todos trabajan en proyectos individuales pero también colectivos. El pasado marzo, la Universidad Europea de Madrid reconoció con el premio Jóvenes Emprendedores Sociales su proyecto de mejora del entorno urbano, Cien Pies. Esta iniciativa empresarial pionera se encamina a acercar la vida de la calle a los niños a través de rutas escolares a pie custodiadas por monitores y voluntarios, evitando la congestión de tráfico y contaminación a las horas de entrada y salida de los colegios. La filosofía del espacio como mensaje trasciende un modo de trabajar. Marrades y sus compañeros de L’Ambaixada exportan como consultores, bajo la Estratègia Comboi, su modelo de proyecto a otros municipios para aprovechar locales vacíos que reúnan a jóvenes emprendedores con ideas de trabajo en común. “La herramienta más importante de participación ciudadana no es la asamblea, sino el uso de la ciudad”.

Unidad Nacional priorizará Reforma a la salud y proyecto de castigo a conductores ebrios

El presidente de Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, aseguró este martes que la Unidad Nacional sigue compacta y funcionando con la aprobación en el Congreso de las reformas que necesita el país. En esta reunión con los presidentes de los partidos que hacen parte de la coalición (Liberal, La U, Conservador, Cambio Radical y Verde), priorizó la agenda legislativa. Dijo: “En el Senado la prioridad debe ser reforma a la Salud, una ley que el pueblo está esperando y que es necesaria. Ya se aprobó una ley estatutaria donde se le cambió el sentido a lo que debe ser la salud dejó de ser un negocio para convertirse en un derecho fundamental”. También, aseguró que habrá mensaje de urgencia para el proyecto de ley que sanciona a los conductores ebrios, “esto permitirá a los colombianos pasar unas navidades más seguras”.

“Hay que separar la política de drogas y la política de seguridad”, ha asegurado Antonio Mazzitelli, representante de la Oficina de la ONU contra la Droga y el Delito en México. Mazziteli ha hablado en contra de criminalizar el consumo y a favor de perseguir a los cárteles en el foro sobre políticas públicas en materia de drogas para la Ciudad de México. El diputado del Partido de la Revolución Democrática en la Asamblea del DF Vidal Llerenas prepara para este mes un borrador de regulación la marihuana en la ciudad inspirado en estos foros y en el modelo de Colorado, que también tolera el uso recreativo del cannabis. “Las convenciones no piden a los estados criminalizar al consumidor, al contrario: piden que brinden servicios como rehabilitación y reinserción social a los consumidores”, y en particular a los que tienen problemas o que cometen crímenes bajo la influencia de estas sustancias. Una herramienta es la justicia alternativa, es decir, los tribunales de adicciones que juzguen y castiguen los delitos cometidos bajo influencia de sustancias (también legales, como el alcohol).

Los representantes de los grupos de agricultores colombianos y los ministros del gobierno dicen que aún no han sido capaces de llegar a un acuerdo para poner fin a una huelga de 10 días. Las protestas por el ganado, lácteos y agricultores se han paralizando partes del país, y los manifestantes acusan al gobierno de dirigir el sector agrícola en el suelo. En la agenda son el alto costo de los fertilizantes y otros materiales agrícolas clave, y cómo los agricultores están siendo socavados por las importaciones más baratas y los productos agrícolas que se contrabando en la frontera a partir de la vecina Venezuela y Ecuador. El gobierno había esperado acuerdo sobre suficientes problemas podría llegar a finales del martes a los manifestantes para levantar las barricadas que han causado caos en el tráfico en muchas partes del país.

New Tutoring Procedures

 Did you know that Practica Plática offers free Spanish tutoring for all members?

 Each Tuesday, beginning February the 5th, Pepe officers will be offering tutoring services from 5:00 p.m. until the beginning of the weekly meeting at 6:30p.m. Tutoring is available for both lower and upper division Spanish classes including SPN 601, 610, 611, 327G, and many more. We will be in the sitting area in the Union next to Starbucks and the Cactus Cafe!  Just send us an email ahead of time so we know we will be expecting you.

Can't come during the tutoring hour? 

Sign up for our free tutor-matching! After you sign up, we will match your specific needs with an appropriate volunteer tutor. After we have given you their information, you and your tutor are free to negotiate your own meeting time. If you are interested, speak with an officer after our weekly meeting.

Want to help the cause?

Sign up to tutor with Pepe! We are now accepting volunteers for Spanish tutors for this semester. We will sign off for any community service/Peace Corps hours that you volunteer. If interested, please email us or speak with an officer after our weekly meeting.
